Girls On Film, Attention System, + 1?

I played a show with Girls On Film this last weekend with Ars Phoenix, Entertainment, and Earth Empire. I really love and envy Entertainment for their sound, their aesthetic, and their energy. I talked a bit with Trey Ehart and he expressed his enthusiasm for what I add to the Girls’ live sound. I was actually feeling really off for most of the day, but times like this and people like this are why I keep doing what I do. If you have not heard Entertainment, I recommend finding a copy of Gender.

I am also recently finished mixing and mastering the new Ars Phoenix release, Hanging Fire. Go bother him and For Documentation Only records to find out how to get it. Now that I have some down time, I will be finishing up my next album. Again, sorry for the delay.

The first show was really great, except for it being the last show with SweenyMachine (the drummer).  It is rare to find lady drummers, but she is quite good and is already missed. The second show nearly resulted in the death of the completely inept “sound-guy” by hands that were not mine.

On a related note, they might be seeking out a new drummer.  If you live in Tallahassee or Gainesville, have reliable methods of transportation, enjoy drumming, can drum to a click, and can play along with the Girls’ dress code, feel free to contact them.  In the past they have used an electronic pad kit but if you have your own set (electric or acoustic), and can play well, I doubt they would turn you away for it.  I cannot guarantee anything because this is their music, their choice, and their show…but it cannot hurt to inquire or discuss.

Over the the last two weeks, I have had the displeasure of wrestling with a dear friend; my G4 Desktop. At this point, I see a computerless studio in my future. I have never been so infuriated with my tools. It is easy for the novice to blame tools; it is easier when the tools are broken.

In better news, dear friends documented a recent show.  Soon video will surface and those of you who cannot make it to shows can see what I do.  For most of you, it is through no fault of your own; it is not like I am on tour.

In closing, procrastination prevails this Halloween.  Only at this very moment have I decided what I should be.  Only a stranger knew….The best I ever knew.

That said…let me share a little story. It is April 17th of 2009 in Gainesville, Florida. I am playing at a local bicycle co-op place called (mostly unironically) The Kickstand. I only have cursory knowledge of Realicide from a few listens on myspace, the vague impression I get from their gutter punk appearance from across the room, and a few conversations overheard.

I found out I was scheduled to play last, and they would be playing before me. I was kind of disappointed that I would probably be setting up my gear and lighting while they played their set. I was quickly shocked to find they were going to be playing out of their PA in addition to the house PA. Shocked in only the way crew can be shocked by a startlingly LOUD line check….plus trailing echoes.

I was half-expecting a brainless 45 minute gabber punch fest. What I received, while I was setting up, was possibly harder than any hardcore, metal, butt rock, punk, noise, whatever band that I have ever experienced. The only thing I can imagine being more shocking would have been threat of injury.

These guys operate on a loudness level that could rival Pan Sonic. These guys are as coherent, literate, and impassioned as Whitehouse. They will deceive you through their aforementioned “crusty gutter punk” appearance…but what they delivered in 45 minutes could be described as hardcore soul music.

They insulted no one. They harmed no one. They came from a shitty experience in Miami where they were paid nothing, where no one could give them a floor to sleep on. They spilled their guts in a way that I have never seen.

Realicide are not Nihilists.
If anything, they are empaths.

Go see them. Chat them up. They like company.

I am working on a bandcamp profile. I plan on releasing a few web only EPs on there; The covers I have done, demo versions of some of my tracks, maybe remixes too.

I am currently working on recording vocals and progress is being made on new music. Still sifting through ALOT of old stuff that I forgot about.

I will also begin rehearsing for a few dates in November and December with Girls On Film. I am going to play keys for them and probably look out of place since it is an all girl band. Recommendations for 80s style pseudonyms are welcome…I need one. (I do not need 80s clothes though.)
